John Obi Mikel is a boss in his right
The Nigerian midfielder has been there throughout all their recent managers and is now enjoying a renaissance under Guus Hiddink.
Mikel has been restored to the team since Hiddink and, at a time when many Blues fans have fallen out with the majority of the squad, he remains a beaming light of professionalism.
And here’s 6 reasons he’s a true Chelsea legend.
6. He chose Chelsea over Man United
Everybody knows the story of how United agreed terms to sign Mikel from Norwegian side Lyn in 2005, only for Chelsea to move in.
They eventually negotiated an agreement for United to cancel their pre-contract agreement, and Mikel chose to join Chelsea despite already posing in the Red Devils kit and having a press conference.
Proper hero!
5. He’s won loads
Make no mistakes, while he’s not always been a regular in the side, he’s got an incredible trophy cabinet.
He really enjoyed winning the Europa League
Mikel has won the league twice, FA Cup four times, Capital One Cup twice, a Community Shield, the Europa League and the Champions League.
Add to that the African Nations Cup and Chelsea Young Player of the Year twice. Most players would be envious of those medals.
4. His pass completion record is insane
Mikel’s passing isn’t always cutting open defences or clearing from his back four, but that doesn’t mean they’re not accurate.
Mikel is the master of a sideways/backward pass
In his first three years at Chelsea, he had the highest pass completion in the Premier League, boasting an impressive 89.93%. That’s even better than the likes of Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard or Man United’s Paul Scholes.
He’s since returned to those stats, being the only player on the pitch to gain possession as many times as he lost it against Crystal Palace, and completing 78 of his 82 passes.
3. He never complains
There’s been a couple of alleged revolts in the Chelsea dressing room in recent years – which have ultimately led to the exit of the manager.
He’s a lover not a fighter.
2. He actually has unreal tekkers
A tough tackling central midfielder, people forget that Mikel actually has some pretty impressive skills in his locker
Mikel <3 Chelsea
Despite that, he’s refused to push for a transfer away, despite Besiktas and Galatasaray both admitting in the summer that they wanted him.
Instead, he’s just got his head down and worked hard, and has now got his place back in the Chelsea line up – without saying a thing.
A true gentlemen.
